Most successful music artists

It's well known that The Beatles achieved more in seven years than most musicians do in a lifetime, but a new graphic allows users to compare and contrast the success of musicians including Frank Sinatra and Beyoncé.

According to the graphic, which is based on data from Billboard and Musicbrainz, Beyoncé's hit rate with number one albums is unrivalled, while Barbara Streisand has had the longest career of those musicians who have regularly brought out chart-topping records.

Streisand has released 35 records, of which nine reached the top of the album charts, over the course of her continuing career, which begins on the graphic with her first album in 1963.

But even the phenomenally successful Garth Brooks, who has sold more than 68 million records since 1989, has had a lower hit rate of number one albums to records released than Eminem, Rick Ross and the Dave Matthews Band.

Beyoncé and her husband Jay-Z take first and fourth place in the hit rate top five, with Mrs Carter achieving number one with every album she has released. While she has been releasing records as a solo artist only since 2003, The Beatles' career was shorter – and more productive – with 14 number one albums, nine of which were consecutive hits.
